The Karl Carter Foundation

Dear family, friends, and members of the music and drumming community,

On August 29, 2023, we tragically lost Karl “Animal” Carter, a pivotal figure and cherished soul within our circle. Karl’s remarkable talents as a drummer, composer, band leader, educator, and mentor brought immense joy and inspiration to so many of us!

This profound loss deeply affected Joe DeRose. Joe was Karl’s protégé and was mentored by Karl at age 12. Because of the deep emotional bond between these two kindred spirits, Joe felt compelled to honor Karl’s life, as his mentor and friend! He reached out to Karl’s wife, Murender, and shared with her the indelible impact Karl had on his life. Murender was deeply moved by Joe’s story. This was the beginning of a true friendship. Joe then went on to discuss his relationship with Vater Percussion, the World’s leading drumstick manufacturer. He revealed to Murender his vision of creating a special set of drumsticks in Karl’s memory. Joe named these sticks “The Pocket” after Karl’s inspiration to always “keep the groove in the pocket”. He graciously offered to donate a portion of the proceeds to Murender for each pair of sticks printed. It was at this moment that Joe and Murender agreed to use these proceeds to create a foundation in Karl’s memory, The Karl Carter Foundation!

The Karl Carter Foundation will continue Karl’s legacy by supporting underprivileged drummers; drummers of all ages, race, and gender, including attention to students with special needs.

“The Karl Carter Foundation is committed to fostering an environment where every individual can thrive and succeed no matter their economic, physical, or mental situation. We offer leadership mentoring, aimed at building self-esteem, managing peer interactions, and overcoming life’s obstacles. Additionally, we provide specialized coaching and counseling to equip these students with the tools they need to excel in their schools, communities, and their musical endeavors!”

The Karl Carter Foundation is proud to announce that introductory group classes will soon be available at Musik Ink Studios in San Jose, CA. Selected students will receive a block of private lessons, paid for by The Foundation, through the Rhythm Academy, San Jose’s premier drum school. They may choose their own instructor from RA’s many gifted educators. Master Classes are soon to follow!
